Wilpon says Minaya will be back in 2010

In attendance for Saturday's tribute to the 1969 "Miracle Mets," owner Fred Wilpon told the New York Post that Omar Minaya would indeed be returning next season:

"Am I going to bring Omar back next year?" Wilpon said. "Absolutely. That's a fact."

Already approaching lame-duck status before his contract extension even kicks in, the Mets are on the hook with Minaya through 2012. Joel Sherman of the New York Post cites the Wilpon's financial situation as a significant factor in keeping Minaya around :

A Mets official told me recently that the problem with dismissing Minaya was not just eating a three-year extension that does not even kick in until next season, but also eating all of the money for an entire front-office staff. I assume that probably amounts to $12 million over three years to account for both the outgoing and incoming staff. That the Mets are unwilling to do that says something about how they will approach augmenting an incomplete roster for 2010.

And what about Jerry Manuel? Well, Minaya said his job is safe too:

"Jerry is my guy," Minaya said. "We work well together."

You know, just to kill any optimism that Mets fans had left.

This is why the Mets will never win.. The Wilpons just don't get it.. Maybe Jerry can work Caroline's on the Mets off nights next year...

"I assume that probably amounts to $12 million over three years to account for both the outgoing and incoming staff."

If the Wilpons are worried about $12 million over 3 years, this team is in loads of trouble. Here is an idea, let Wagner go to the Sox,*poof* there is $3.5 mil in savings (includes buyout next year). Also getting a competent gm, can easily save you $10 mil a year in unwanted salaries. Don't sign Tim Redding for $2.5 mil. Don't sign Fernando Tatis for $1.75 mil. Replace them with Jon Niese and Nick Evans. Don't exercise option of JJ Putz, save $7.6 mil. That's about $12 mil for next year. How did I do?

Good to know. Now I don't have to bother buying tickets for season two at citifield. I can just throw out the stuff the Mets send me.
I guess his back up for GM, Bernie Madoff, is unavailable.
Nate for GM!

Too Bad. Minaya's "Los Mets" have no leadership and give their fans no hope. Just another example of poor decisions by the Wilpons to go along with their Madoff decsion. How do you plan to put the people back in the the seats? Who is accountable for this years disaster?

"Oh the pain, the pain"

Why, oh why do we do the same things over and over again! Can't we get someone who knows how to run a team to buy the Mets? Maybe like Al Davis or some owner with some guts who isn't afraid to recognize that they made a mistake with this lame excuse for a GM. What now, I guess we should anticipate the Mets trading any healthy, productive player in the off season since that is generally what happens right?

I have been a Met fan from the beginning. It is the same old story but as I get older it gets more and more boring.

The Mets are a good team that suffered some serious injuries, be patient. Met fans sound like a bunch of whining wimps that must have everything right.
Ps/ I'm a Dodger fan.

Minaya has ran the team into the toilet. His ,"Los Mets" have the heart of a kitten! He needs to sign Matt Holiday, to give the team some sort of credibility!

Hopefully not only do the muts keep Minaya, BUT they keep Jerry as the coach. I'd love to see this train wreck in 2010 and for many more years. Its just funny stuff, whats there not to like?

A season of injuries to their best players have done them in. Minaya's biggest mistake was signing Oliver Perez to be big multi year deal. That was a big waste of money.

Too bad Wilpon never took note and watched his cross town counter part turned a $10 million investment into a billion dollar franchise. Maybe be should take a few lessons out of the Steinbrenner play book. Mats fans deserve more.

You have got to be kidding me!!!!!

Wilpon Minaya and Manuel - WMM - Weapons of Mass Malfeasance

Jim Hendry and Lou are availiable and the Cubs would gladly give up Soriano and Milt Bradley, you Met fans are not alone with your frustrations. We're hoping Tom Ricketts will rescue us

What some of you forget is the fact that before Omar Minaya,
the Met were down at the hole for so many years, they didnt
Win the division in 20 years, there werent tickets sell. Now
After Minaya became GM,there were more 48 thoucends tickets sell for most of the games,Beside all the sells that came in from,Jersey, caps so forth and so on.

Minaya has single handly crushed the org. They have no minor leagues, they had one layer of talent that all ended up on the DL. His job is to develop the org and be ready for the Oh Shit's that happen. This guy has done a piss poor job, and Manuel has no heart, no drive and absolutely no leadership abilities since he can not hold anyone accountable for their actions. The Wilpon's are crazy if they do not drop both of them as soon as they can! A winner will bring them more money then they can imagine, "they just need to believe" they can do it again with the right people!

I never would've thought at things like that. This will make my morning a bunch easier.
