It's hard to truly gauge crowd noise from the TV broadcast. TBS, for example, is notorious for over-amplifying the crowd via some unique mic placement (they did it with the Braves for years and still do it now that they broadcast national games). At the same time, the Indians broadcasts I watch most nights during the summer seem unnaturally quiet compared to the way I know that ballpark sounds in person.
But despite the vagaries of technology, it's been pretty obvious how quiet Yankee Stadium was during the first two games of the Series (where is this guy?). Buck and McCarver talked about it at length last night, and today FOX's Ken Rosenthal gets the Phillies' take on it:
Thank goodness the World Series is leaving New York so we can get a little atmosphere.I've certainly noticed the price-the-passionate-fans-out effect in other venues. Ohio State basketball games used to be raucous before they moved into a big plush and expensive arena a decade ago. Almost every new NFL stadium has rendered the previous roar of the home crowd a murmur."Our ballpark is so loud and rowdy, I was really expecting some of that here," Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins said. "It was very tame and civil."
...From mystique and aura to tame and civil. What has the Bronx come to?
"Expensive tickets running loud people out," Rollins said, referring to the high prices at the new Yankee Stadium . . .I asked the three Phillies outfielders in Game 1 -- Ben Francisco, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth -- if they had heard any abuse from the fans.
"Crickets," one of the outfielders said, and I don't even know why I am granting him anonymity; it's not like revealing his identity would put him in any danger.
But the Stadium has been loud at times this postseason, so I'm not willing to totally chalk it up to the richies taking over. There may be some of that -- especially considering that the ultra-richies probably buy tickets from the mere super richies for the World Series -- but I think the dominating performance by Lee in Game 1 and the stronger than expected outing from Pedro last night had a lot more to do with it. There has yet to be an instance in either game where Yankees fans had justification to go crazy so, not surprisingly, they haven't gone crazy.
All of that said, I expect Philly to be positively insane tomorrow night. I mean, even if nothing exciting happens on the field, the roar of Philly fans yelling about how no one believes in them will be deafening enough on its own.

It's not the ticket prices. It's something else, maybe fear? Dunno.
What I do know, though, is that it's not the ticket prices. The ALCS was loud, and the WS hasn't been. The NYC sports bar across the street from me was very loud during the ALCS and *silent* for two nights.
Some commenters over at riveraveblues.com have mentioned that games during the ALCS were just as loud as YSII, so maybe it's just the dominance of Lee in Game 1 that kept them quiet. Then again, what do you expect the Phillies guys to say? Why not ask some yankees players what they think?
I was at Game 2 last night ... I don't know what to say, but it was LOUD, very loud
Where were you sitting, Glen? Reading some other message boards, people are saying that it was loud in the cheaper seats farther away, but that the noise just didn't reach past the quiet baseline and behind-the-plate seats down to the field.
Not that complicated: The Yankees sold their home field advantage for $1.5 billion. At least they got a lot of money for it. As another corrupt jerk once said, "It's a f'ing valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing."
Honestly, as a Yankee fan, I think the fans are as tight as some of the players. First trip to the WS since 2003, haven't had a win since 2000...there's a lot of pressure. Yes, that's nuts, but it's kind of the definition of being a "fan".
If a stadium is loud, you hear it everywhere.
If 3 guys behind you are screaming, the stadium is not loud.
Only the TV commercials are loud!
It's loud in the cheaper seats. In the field boxes you hear the people in those seats saying "Now which one is that Jeter guy? He's the quarterback, right? "
I couldn't help but notice on both games during the later innings how many of the "best" seats were empty. Doesn't look good for a World Series. I'm sorry but making the seats, especially the real close ones, so expensive have shut out the true fans of baseball. I'm from Chicago and feel bad for the true Yankee fans.
i have been to several games at the new stadium including opening day and there is a different dynamic. part of it is the moat around the infield where previously you had a lot of people happy as hell to have such good seats being crazy. now we have hedge fund managers and dignitaries doing the "golf clap".
i sit upstairs and in the bleachers...it is just a loud as always where the real people sit. yankee fans, however, have never been a first pitch to last pitch crowd.
also need to keep selling beer after the 7th like the old days.
also, i hate hearing again about the cost fot he stadium...its new york...the same stadium anywhere else except southern Cal cost half as much.
except for around the field, same people attending.
also, phillies are not a rivalry...alcs loud...alcs against the sox...deafening.
That is funny because as a Phillies Phan, I was wondering what was going on... they were so quiet even when they were winning.... Wait until they hit Citizens Bank Park baby!!!! They will hear them in Lancaster PA.. Rock On!!
It looked like the Yank fans were sitting on their hands for most of the game. They could not even get a good "Who's your daddy" chant going.
Don't expect the same in Citizens Bank Park. The Philly loyal will be all over the Yanks players and cheering on the Phils. Game 4 could get real loud. The Eagles play the Giants Sunday afternoon at the Linc then game 4 is across the street Sunday night. South Philly will be jumping. And copious amounts of alcohol will be consumed. The Phils don't have many of the ultra-riches, just a ton of die hard fans that love their Philly teams.
Whoever wrote this article obviously was not at game 6 of the ALCS with me. Yankee stadium was CRAZY LOUD. Craig, do some research before your write dumb articles...thanks
This post is about the World Series, not the ALCS. And from the post itself:
"But the Stadium has been loud at times this postseason"
Dan, do some research before you write dumb comments . . .thanks
It's cold out. Cliff Lee + Rain does not a raucous crowd make.
"Phils don't have many of the ultra-riches" funny last time I checked Stubhub, Citizens Park tickets were going for twice as much as in New York. Greed is everywhere, yes even in Philly where they sold the naming rights to the park.
I think it is partly due to the stadium design - the noise spills out now where it used to be contained - went to game 1 and it was obvious that there is such a sound delay that the crowd on the two sides of the stadium were never in sync with their cheers and just gave up - that never happened in the old place where the concrete shook with 54,000 in unison
Craig,
This is a direct result of the increase in the cost of tickets changing the demographic of the crowd. As you cited in your article, as the prices go up, the crowds get more tame, civil and QUIET.
It's a shame because it eliminates the home field advantage. On top of that, it packs the stadium with cell-phone wielding executives that are too busy entertaining clients and making business deals to pay attention to the game.
That said, I'd much rather have a quiet disinterested home crowd than a convict-laden, barbaric Philly crowd. There's nothing endearing about fans that throw batteries, cheer serious injuries and assault fans of the opposing teams.
Because game 4 and 5 are potential series ending games, they get a much bigger draw then a game 1 or 2. Plus with only about 100 miles separating the cities there are many NY people looking to take the ride down the NJ Turnpike to catch the game. Just think how much tix will cost for game 7 in the Bronx. And yes its looking like there will be a game 7 in this series.
And selling name rights to stadiums is commonplace these days. Its big business, has nothing to do with the fans.
I was there last night, upper deck... behind home plate... and it was pretty loud where I was. I think most of it it because it's mostly good pitching ... and big offense, especially from the home team, is what drives the noise level up. Man, these type of articles and the type I saw in the Daliy News really makes me hate the NY media! These people will try to blow up aything they can, truth be damned!
They're LISTED for insane amounts of money, but that doesn't mean they're actually selling for that amount.
I was there Wednesday night that's BS the crowd was loud in the beginning but Cliff Lee took the crowd out. During the Division Series and ALCS the crowd was loud. Joe Buck is a piece of crap he is only there because of his father and is a terrible broadcaster. Let me remind everyone there he has an even greater disdain for Piladelphia fans then he does for New York.
"Where were you sitting, Glen? Reading some other message boards, people are saying that it was loud in the cheaper seats farther away, but that the noise just didn't reach past the quiet baseline and behind-the-plate seats down to the field."
In no particular order-
1-As others have said, down 7-0 in G1, where you don't even have guys on base, doesn't do a lot to incite the crowd.
2-It was pretty loud where I was in section 209, but that has a level above it which tends to amplify the noise.
3-I think ticket prices have held down crowd noise this year, but the bleachers is still fairly rowdy.
4-I think the societal push to behave has dampened noise as well. Once upon a time, going beserk at a ballgame was fun and appreciated. Chants like 'beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife', and 'Jose takes it up the a**, doo dah, doo dah', were considered good clean fun. Now we're told to be polite.
5-It's possible that the proximity to Philly might have something to do with it. In the ACLS, the crowd was probably almost entirely Yankee. With Philly 2 hours away, there is a much higher probability and percentage of Philly fans at the stadium. With only half the crowd getting rowdy at a time, you can't generate the same crowd noise as having 95%.
You can tell it's a phony crowd when on every routine pop fly to Victorino, the crowd starts to cheer like it's a home run. Ahhh, good ole casual fans with money.
I have been to every home game during these playoffs and I am disgusted to say that these articles are correct. There is no longer a home field advantage at Yankee Stadium. The new stadium is garbage. That being said screw all you class-less, jacka$$, ex-con, scumbag Philly fans. Fox needs to fire Joe Buck!!!!!!!!!
It's the World Series! The 'Little Sisters of the Poor' is a rivalry. Of course maybe that point of view is why it's so quiet.
That thing about cheering every pop fly ... I hear that during many playoff games. And opening day. Can't believe I'm defending Yankee fans.
With my ticket invitation comes the rule that you're there until Frank Sinatra sings!
IDIOT, You've never been to a Phillies game. This isn't what you get at a phills game. You must be confused with Eagles games from the sixties moron. Don't believe everything you read. I've never heard so much uppity bs over baseball until we had to play the NY Yankees. Gods honest truth. Never heard this crap with Mets Fans, Dodgers Fans, Rays Fans. No wonder NYC smells like a dumpster..... All the Bullcrap you fans have rolling out of your "moufs".
Yes, one hears cheers for pop flys in every stadium, but Yankee stadium seems the worst this year (I've seen games in 8 different stadiums this year). The novice fan will watch the ball and, from a fan's perspective, it seem as though a fly ball is going, going gone.
The very first MLB game I saw was in Metropolitan Stadium in MN. Killebrew hit a fly ball and I started cheering, thinking that it was a HR. My dad told me to watch the fielders on any fly ball and you'll know if it's going out or if it's going to get between fielders. I've followed this advise and it works everytime.
Meanwhile, the Yankees break attendance records every year and the philthy fans just showed up out of nowhere when their team started to win. they have classless, animal fans.
Reading some of these posts is laughable -- so now attending a baseball game is something esoteric? "One only cheers at the precise moment the ball goes over the wall..." "How gauche, these casual fans..." "Clapping correctly is essential..."
Just watch the frickin' games & shut up.
I absolutely love the Yankees for them having God Bless America (with the preamble) sang at their games. I'm not sure if its network TV that sometimes cuts it out due to revenue issues, but when it is broadcast I swell with pride and respect New York all the more. Watching it being sung at Game One brought tears to my eyes and brought back again that sense of togetherness we behold as a nation. The Yankees should always make sure the performance of this song is broadcast for all of us coast to coast during games that bear the stature of championship and World Series caliber.
If you think YS was loud wait until you get to CBP. Take some notes yankees fans. Philly knows how to cheer, they expect their team to play to win, not merely get dressed like the yank fans think. They act as if they are owed a world series title for some ridiculous reason.
Calcaterra is on Q with the "Yankees suck" article for the day. Must suck to have a team run your life.
If only AJ could find a few thousand pies for the fans. Because I the piethrowing, silly as it might seem, has done a lot to help make playing baseball fun for the Yankees.
I like it, too, except for one thing. The public address announcer always asks everyone to remove their head covers. This is incorrect. One should remove a head cover only for the playing of the national anthem; removing one's head cover for any other song is showing disrepect for the NA.
I was at the first ALDS game between the Twins and Yanks and the same announcement was made over the PA system. Then the in-stadium camera showed the West Point cadets in attendance at the game and everyone of them was wearing his/her head cover. They knew better. Too bad the Yank front office doesn't know this.
i completley agree with you. it seems like they are making the Yankee name or logo a freaking fashion statement again. you get those stupid bandwaggon fans jumping on board and the true die hard fans like myself are left sitting in a bar somewhere instead of being at the game because the stupid celebrities wanna be pampered at a freaking baseball game, just flat out stupid. rip those seats out and move the BLEACHER CREATERS down there, i bet that place will be loader than any other stadium in the MLB. (note..please excuse spelling errors I'm not the best at the english language, and I have been a Yankee fan since birth and I dont get why we needed a new stadium in the first place).
I was at game 2 last night, 200's level. It was much quieter than games at the old stadium. When AJ had 2 strikes 2 outs, my group along with the first few rows stood up to clap, just like they have done at the stadium since Guidry, and we were all yelled at by fellow Yankee fans. Every 2 strike pitch we were yelled at "down in front!" and "sit the F*** down". We tried to start chants, claps, it was like pulling teeth. Some of those who actually were cheering turned and yelled back, "if you are not going to cheer at the World Series stay home". Philly fans in our section actually asked me if it was always like this, they felt bad for us. The only time the crowd went really nuts is when Mo Rivera came in for the 8th and 9th. Very strange crowd, I have never seen a home crowd like this before at any sporting event. ALCS game 1 was not like this.
Hey, Yankee fans and other fans of big spending teams. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. Every off-season, you want your teams to sign every big name FA and then complain when the team raises ticket and concession prices. Duh. What did you expect? A free lunch?
Look, replace CC, AJ, and Teixeira with Hughes, Chamberlain, & Duncan and what have you? A team that's as good as the Royals...maybe.
Preserve baseball with two changes to the players' union contract. No FA until 8 full seasons in the MLB and no team may sign more than one class A FA during any season. Also, MLB needs to do something about trades to big market teams by small market teams of stars. Where would Cleveland be with CC, Lee, and Martinez? Probably in the the post season.
What could've been the Royals starting OF? Beltran, Damon, and Ibanez.
Gotta get FA and fire-sale trades under control or the MLB will be left with 10 or so teams.
I'm not knocking or propping up any fanbase. Just the fake fans that show up for big games that suck out home field advantage. (See the Warriors playoff run a couple of years ago for a prime example.)
These more casual fans just don't cheer as well as your average die-hard who goes to multiple games over the season.
You btter look again, they had sales to get fans into seats this year in NYC and still didn't sell out a lot of games.
I got into two fights with Yankees fans in game 1 about standing up. These dipsh!its need to stay home and allow the real fans to get to the game. I don't quite understand how when we moved stadiums the upper deck prices remained nearly the same, but now it is filled with a bunch of lame "down in front" type fans. What happened?? If these clowns are going to yell at me for standing up in game 6 and 7 (if necessary), I am going to yell right back in their faces. I guarantee I am much louder than them. LET"S GO YANKEES!!!
No, dummy, one doesn't cheer at the moment the ball clears the fence, but one doesn't cheer a popout to the shortstop either and that's what novice fans cheer, because they don't realize that their perspective on the game may make it appear that every fly ball will be a HR.
Naw, check the attendance records for the last 5 years; the Phils have been in the top half of MLB attendance every year and in the top 5 several of these years. Plus, CBP has far fewer 'corporate' season ticket holders than do the Yanks.
I agree with Nez. I was watching Mike Francesa and he said he thinks the quietness at the Stadium is due to the design. I think it is not the same without the roar of the crowd.
As a "down in front" fan, I assumed the idiots standing up had never been to a baseball game. Real fans don't stand unless they have a reason to -- like a home run, and amazing play or the end of the game. And not with two strikes, because it always tend to jinx things. Yankee fans, true Yankee fans, are smart enough to sit in the seats they paid for.
Agree, it's rude to stand unless something big is happening, such as a play at 3B or HP or a HR or a ball hit into the corner. But standing when an opposing batter has a 2-strike count is bush league.
Be courteous and polite and consider the other fans. For some fans, standing may be difficult.
I repeat - stay home.
It's not the ticket prices. It's that we've been watching great pitching from both teams esp. Lee in Game 1 which has set the tone for the first two games. I think Lee's near shut out in Game 1 took some of the swagger out of the Yanks fans and they haven't recuperated yet.
I completely agree about not standing on a two-strike count. I referred to it as a jinx, but yes, it's definitely bush league as well. You're the type of fan that qualifies as a real fan.
I also agree with everyone who blames architecture for the quiet in the new Stadium -- the one that's beautiful, but was completely unnecessary. The old Stadium would shake from the sound and it was amazing. Wish they could figure out how to duplicate that in the new stadium.
kevin, you got into it with two Yankee fans, because you're contentious and arrogant. Witness your comment "stay home." So, what you want to do is more important than other fans being able to see the game? You're a schmuck.
Good to see A.Rod can't be counted on. Sure, up to the World Series he was the hottest thing in the MLB, now he is halfway to the World Series record for strike outs.
A.J., Rivera, and Jeter seem to be the only Yankees that have bothered to show up. With of course the one home run by slap me around and call me Texiera.
Granted Howard hasn't shown up either, short of a double but, still the Phillies have kept the Yankees to 4 runs in two games.
Hamels better not pull the same B.S. he has been pulling the rest of the season. The Phillies need game three and I see no reason why Hamels should hand it to the Yankees.
It is a surprising sight to see empty seats behind home plate, in the World Series. Hopefully it will not the same in Philly.
Go Phills!
Are you seriously preaching the virtues of sitting down with 2 strikes? IT'S THE WORLD SERIES!! What the hell is going on in New York? As a Yankee fan, I was in DC last night watching the game and am sitting in Miami right now, and everyone I've talked to about the game is wondering why the hell the stadium was so dead last night. I try to make excuses but the fact is that much of the clientele that attends Yankee Games these days are the pink hat wearing types who go on message boards talking about how rude it is to stand up to cheer during the World Series. Its the same plague that is destroying the crowds at Fenway Park. Philly fans, it sounds like it hasn't hit your town yet. Your crowds still have heart and swagger. I am envious.
I bet you're one of idiots who did the wave too. Please, please go away and stick with the Mets or something.
Not to pile on, but have you ever attended a big time college football game anywhere in America? Or been to ANY other country in the world and sat in the stands at a soccer game? Sitting at any point during at these events is not an option.
I mean there is no softer crowd in baseball than Baltimore, and I remember going to the ALCS in 1996 when the Yanks played the O's and the entire second deck stood for the whole game. 2 strikes, 1 strike, in between innings. It didn't matter. So I'm really confused as to why the new Yankee Stadium is suddenly as soft as the crowd at the Shamu show at Sea World. Like it literally makes me sad.
I had to look up the whole "pink hat" thing, and believe me, I'm not. But it's precisely those kind of front-runner jerks who think it makes them look like true fans to stand throughout the game. It doesn't. I'll give you a pass on the two-strike thing -- it's bush, but understandable. However, if, like me, you've been keeping scorecards at Yankee games since you were four, you really appreciate being able to see the play.
Can't believe you're comparing Major League Baseball to something as lame as college football, or any football for that matter. And soccer? Come on, they also riot and kill losing coaches. You said Baltimore fans were soft, and also that they stood -- perhaps those are your proto-pink hatters. Fans like to actually WATCH games. The electricity is in the game itself, not the obnoxious actions of front-runner types who think they're the game.
You are right about the 2 strike thing if you are talking about the regular season. But the playoffs and especially the World Series, are different. They always have been. So the costum of not standing during the World Series is new and, at least to me, totally depressing. I've been to NFL and MLB playoff games where the entire crowd stood for the whole game. It makes for a much better fan experience.
Look, just keep an eye on the crowd in Philly tomorrow night. You'll notice a major difference in passion and intensity. And this is coming from a Yankee fan. Wouldn't you rather be a part of that kind of crowd?
"As lame as college football." Ok you have never been to a college football game. I played college football and have been to games where crowds of 100k crazy people stand and scream the entire game. The first time you see it it'll blow you away. Take my word for it.
Yankee fans do the 2-strike-standing thing throughout the season. I know, I see about 10 to 15 games in the stadium every year. During all of the World Cup games including the final, I never saw the fans stand throughout an entire match or even during long spells. Even if what you wrote were true, soccer fans also kill fans of opposing teams and refs. Who wants Euro-trash, thuggery or third-world barbarity at baseball games?
So, please, sit down and enjoy the game. Stand and cheer when it's appropriate. The only ones standing are the ones who don't know when it's appropriate to stand; either that or they really gotta take a whiz.
I played Division II baseball and nobody stood during an entire game. Maybe the student body section stands (TX A & M's 13th man), but try taking an 81-year father to a game and see how much he enjoys standing throughout a game.
Baseball ain't football. It's a pastime, not a semi-military operation such as football. (And, yes, I served 8 years, USMC & USMCR.) And soccer is an outlet valve for most countries' nationalism that has been neutered by their political elites.
for those of u not aware this is a new stadium and a different stadium. the first time i stepped into the new yankee stadium i knew this place was not going to be as loud. the fans and seats are spread out a lot more than the old park. the upper deck is now miles off the field as opposed to the old upper deck almost coming out over the field. the geniuses who built this place blew it. dont get me wrong the new park is a palace and is definitely more fan friendly. BUT the place will never be like the old park when it comes to noise. fans are spread out more, the different levels now jut back away from the field as opposed to the old park where the different levels/decks jut towards the field. HENCE, the reason why the park is not allowed. in addition to the corporate white collar crowd that the world series brings. there are also less yankee fans in the house with MLB holding something like almost 15,000 seats. ridiculous.
The experience is not the fans standing, it's the game itself. You are praising something that has nothing to do with anything so much as mob mentality. Obviously, you love being part of a crazed crowd, that doesn't mean you're a fan or in any way knowledgeable about the sport itself.
Loud venues or not, this is certainly shaping up to be a world class series. Pitching dominated the first two games, and the next few will "let the dogs out"!
I am a Phillies fan, yet, thoroughly appreciate and respect the Yankee line-up. Is this a series of hearts versus the pocket book? I don't know, but even so, this will be on heck of a ride.
Hope this series goes 7 games. No matter who wins the bunch of bananas, both teams win the respect of their leagues. Go Phils and Good luck, Yanks!
From Philly: Hats off to our NYC brethren.
Classy comment. We're going to destroy you, but hats off to you as well.
"we", Victoria? I must have missed it. Which position do you play?
This is what happens to fans after they've won. Everyone in that stadium has seen the Yankees win once, twice, some 4 or even 20 times!
Also, the Pheeleys are coming off a series at Dodger stadium where despite having games 1 and 2 at 5PM and 1PM respectively(total bs I might add) I can assure you the stadium was mayhem and the crowd was raucus.
If you wanted some great crowd noise last night, you should have tuned in to the Sounders-Dynamo MLS playoff game on ESPN. Soccer chants > random crowd noise.
You would think the yankees could buy some fans to cheer the team on or just spend some money on a huge surround sound system to pipe in some cheering. Kinda like the laughter you hear on those sitcoms. Don't go cheap Yanks! It's not your style.
Game 1 was all pitching, especially Lee who kept the Yankees off base. Inning after inning, until a harmless run in the 9th. What do you expect from fans when they're going down 1-2-3 every inning? It's typical fan reaction: boredom. Nothing to cheer about, unless the organist makes an appearance or two...then silence once again. Fans also can smell that this just might not be their day to see their team rally. Lee was simply overpowering. Game 2, well that wasn't much of a hitting affair either..low scoring, not many hits. C'mon, what's to discuss here? Fans will fall asleep or simply sit n eat when there's no action. What else is there for them to do? Go to any stadium, any sport and see what happens when the home team is getting shut out or losing by a big score! When it's time you've seen enough, it's time to leave. Time to pack it in!
Oh, one more add-on here:
We were seeing a home game this summer in Milwaukee. A beautiful new stadium. Seating approx 45,000 give or take a few. This night, a near sell out crowd, maybe upper 30,000. Didn't stick around to hear final attendance, but regardless, the score a close 2-2 game against the Pirates turned into a route of 10-2 before the Brewers scored a few late inning runs, long after we departed in the top of the 8th. The crowd had little to cheer about. Most just sat and watched in disbelief what was happening to their turned sour baseball team. A season of promise was already unraveling right before their eyes. A large crowd, little fan noise. Where the seats are, as like in any new stadium today makes little difference. They're all not as close as the old stadiums were, seat wise. When fans sit and say nothing, don't expect seat locations to make up for the difference!
I was at game 2 so didn't hear fox commentary but stadium seemed quite loud to me and very behind aj and mo's performance. Our section was almost always up with two strikes (particularly with two outs). And the philly ofs must not have been listening when 1000 bleacher creatures were serenading them with "horse's a$$" and "Jayson is a friend of mine" throughout the game... I could hear that clearly from the main box. Game 6 of alcs was louder but not by much. And the old stadium could get ridiculously loud but can't really compare Ws crowds yet -- Ny fans are loud when there is reason to be, not because they are getting a free towel or thunderstix!!
I think the high prices (everywhere) has filtered out the most undesirable types. Which is good. Also I read once that they tried to duplicate the noise, excitement of Mile High Stadium, using computers, etc. to "design" in noise. The attempt was a failure. New park is beautiful but dead. The old Spectrum in Philly, (soon to be demolished) was a tremendous place to watch hockey, bb. etc. The crowd noise was unreal. The new place is beautiful, but dead. It just happens. It's a shame to see empty seats during a series. Im old enough to remember when Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers were in their hayday. During a break, an network flack would toddle around the expensive seats. "Well look who is here today, why it's Mitzi Gaynor (who was there to plug her latest show). Someone was booted out of the seat for a minute. No way she was attending a game. I have a friend who was a season ticket holder for the Eagles, from Franklin Field, to the Vet, to the new place. Of course he had a huge fee to pay to "claim his seat". He could not afford it, a loyal fan of 35yrs or more! He was and still is heartbroken. I don't get too "revved up" anymore for this stuff. I hope the boys in red win, but if they don't they all go and clip coupons or something. And Cole Hamels is so full of himself I can't stand it. I think he is a flash in the pan. One good thing about Phils management, they don't put up with this crap. So Cole straighten out or you will be in Cleveland. ha I wonder if the Mets new park is a dead zone? It's a shame. Yank fans are among the most loyal and passionate around. I do feel badly for them. And anyone who has been priced out. Know what, I went to a minor league game this summer. The park was built a few yrs ago. I had fun. Watching baseball like it should be watched. Families, fair prices, etc. And yes, the announcers are HORRID. McCarver hasn't got much of anything right. Sorry for the rant, I'm sad. I'm 65 and I remember what fun pro sports used to be.
A follow up on noise. The LA fans are worse. During that series, all you saw was empty seats. And Dodger Stadium is still a classic stadium, beautiful great sight lines, etc. Don't know if it's the warm weather or what out there but even the lousy tbs crew was hammering them for it. People in the seats, yawning, etc. I don't get it. Anyway it gives me more pleasure in our Phillies kicking the LA boys butts two yrs running. The WS? If we win fine, if not I'm ok with it. Had the Dodgers won I would be pulling for any AL team. I like Yank fans. They are loyal, passionate, get on their boys when they come up short etc. All the same things we do. This is the last time Hamels gets a free ride on last year. And A Rod? More games left I know but. And why did Derek bunt on two strikes. Mmmm. Even the greats come up brain dead at times I guess. A suggestion. Ban that skank Kate Hudson. She is another Jessica Simpson. Bad Karma there. Keep her and her has been parents out.
Lets hope it does not. Its a typical fact of life in this country. The rich get all the breaks etc. The loyal fans who buy the tickets, buy the shirts, jackets, etc. etc. and watch on tv are getting screwed. Do you think Stienbrenner really cares? None of them do. As long as the revenue comes in so what. Its a shame. The left coast crowd will always bee "losers" in my mind but we love our teams from the mid west on. Yankee fans, Phillie fans, Red Sox fans, we are the most passionate, loyal and knowledgeable around. We live and die with our sports teams. Oops I did not mean to omit the Met fans. Is their new park quiet? All the luxury boxes, cafes, bars, etc. etc. Lincon Field was a vanity project for the clueless Eagles owner. It's an odd looking place to say the least. So many weird angles etc. He had some stupid looking tower thing erected to resemble the Eiffle tower in Paris. please spare me
Uh just showing up. Mmmm over 3 million at the new place, the vet seated almost 60,000 for baseball fans went. Your off base (no pun intended). Any way it does not cost $4,000. a month to rent a one room apt. Check the New York and New Jersey emigrants leaving your over priced state and NJ. Just north of the city, Bucks County a lot of your fine citizens have been moving into our area for years. Taxes, Lower!, cost of living lower, auto insurance lower, no wack job leftie politicans giving away the store. So how is your sex addict former governer these days. And your current gov. is an loser. And Rangle or whatever his name is. And your NY based soap operas moving to LA. Shall I go on? But thats ok. Come see all our new casinos, sports palors, real estate prices that have held up, our services for seniors, I'm one and no need to move to Florida to escape high taxes, etc. I do sense jealously. Oh by the way what do you pay for car insurance? NY, and NJ. land of high taxes, and poor services and corrupt and stupid politicans. Your mayor is trying to buy his re election. Please. Oh and the taxes on Social Security and pension income in PA ZERO!!!!!!! MM what is it in NY?
All that whining, not to mention the spelling and grammar issues, and yet, 8M still choose to live in NYC, which is almost the population of all of Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia.
Funnier still, I would never think to criticize those that choose to live in PA. I'm sure there are plenty of nice places for those that prefer the quiet, open spaces. Just be aware that there are those that like the feel of a neighborhood, where the newsstand, the diner, the pub, the church, etc., are all a short walk away, and not a car ride away. Neither better, nor worse-just different.
Based on what you wrote, I expect that you have an inferiority complex about where you live.
WHO ARE THE YANKEES ???
I was surfing around for more information on this topic this evening when I found your really useful article...thanks a million for sharing your thoughts. I will surely be checking up on your blog and visiting again to read new articles.BTW since when have you been blogging? :)
I absolutely am in awe of this article!!! totally gonna have to put this on the list.
Reasons why new stadium feels and sounds like a golf tournament- 1. Upper decks pushed waaayyy back- used to drape over field.
2. Bleacher creachers pushed 20 rows back from field.
3. Music speakers now on volume 2 instead of 10- especially in the bleachers- It used to be like a rock concert between innings to get you juiced- now its like a hand radio on low. The design of the old stadium is what made it the best! Crying shame the new satdium STINKS!!!!
And Yes! I was there for a regular season game AND a playoff game in the bleachers- Yanks won both and it was STILL quiet as a golf tornament in the New Stadium!
The Old Stadium used to rock like a Metallica concert!!!
