Don't worry, Hanley's probably not going anywhere

Bill Madden of the New York Daily News put together a Thanksgiving themed "Top 10 Baseball Turkeys" of 2009. If you really care, he names former Mets VP of player development Tony Bernazard as the top turkey, however the most interesting passage was about Marlins president David Samson, who finished sixth on his list:

The Florida Marlins president obviously has no shame. After finally succeeding in securing a new taxpayer-funded stadium for the Marlins in downtown Miami - supposedly enabling the Marlins to have the financial means to keep their star players - Samson demonstrated he has no intention of doing that when he refused to give his best pitcher, Josh Johnson, a four-year extension. Now it also looks as if Hanley Ramirez won't ever see that new stadium in a Marlins uniform as the Red Sox, who let incumbent Alex Gonzalez go, are reportedly engaged in talks with Florida about reacquiring the All-Star shortstop.

Reportedly can mean a lot of things. It can mean he read it in his own newspaper. Or perhaps another newspaper. It could mean he read it on someone's blog. Or perhaps in the comments' section of said blog. Or it could mean he made it up. The fact is that Ramirez is signed through 2014 at a very reasonable cost, even for Florida. He's not going anywhere.

Update: And another silly Hot Stove rumor bites the dust.

Jeffrey Loria, his pet poodle David Samson, and their highly capable GM Larry Beinfest (whose talents are being used by the Feesh in about the same way that Colin Powell's talents were used by the knuckledragging imbecile he worked for when the latter sent him to the UN in 2003) are the same guys who promised Carlos Delgado that he would not be traded away if he signed with them. You can trust that bunch not to spring for the cheapest alternative about as much as you can trust Bernie Madoff to drive your succulent, nubile young daughter past a camel auction in Sudan and bring her back again. I would love to believe that Hanley will play in Macondo Banana Massacre Field in Feesh teal in a couple of years, but I doubt if even Pete Rose would give me unders on it.

Sorry for my ignorance, but who is Clark Spencer? I'm assuming he's part of the Marlins organization, but in what capacity?

Clark Spencer is a local Miami sportswriter - although, since I only get to read him when using old newspapers to wrap freshly caught fish for the freezer, I can't remember offhand which of the two surviving so-called newspapers down here, the Herald or the Sun-Sentinel, he writes for.

Alright, thanks for the info.
One sportswriter does a short piece reporting that two teams are talking, another sportswriter does a tweet refuting this. I don't see how the rumor "bites the dust". You still have a rumor at the very least.

Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.
