Based on precedent anyway:
[The Phillies] are the 44th team to lose three of the first four games. Of the previous 43 teams, 41 played in a best-of-seven series. (The others were Boston in 1903, who won the next four games to take the Series, and the 1919 Reds, who won over the Black Sox).
Of the 41 teams who dropped three of the first four: They went 18-23 in Game 5. In Game 6, the remaining 18 teams went 8-10.
In Game 7, the remaining squads went 5-3. So, about one-eighth of the teams in this situation win it all. If you're curious, the last seven teams to lose three of the first four couldn't make the comeback.
With Cliff Lee on the mound you have to favor them to make it past hurdle number one, but I don't see them winning out, no matter how much heart they allegedly have.
Time to make history Craig. The Phills let them have those last three... Yeah, that's the ticket. Just to make it more exciting see.... Now it's time for them to show what they have more of....
We'll see.
I just want to hear from that guy who keeps posting "Phillies in 6! MARK MY WORDS!!!" on every post . . .
LOL!!! I'm waiting for him too!!! MARK MY WORDS!!! Well, let's just hope the fat lady doesn't sing until game 7!!!!
Hate the Yanks all you want Phillie fans, but class is class... and when Rollins shot off his mouth, he doomed the Phillies. Have you EVER heard a Yankee predict a series win? Even now, they're saying things like "the Phillies are tough, we expect them to battle back" That's a far cry from "we'll take it in 5, maybe 6 if we feel generous" Jimmy Rollins, you and your fans can learn a lot from the classy Derek Jeter and the Classy New York Yankees.
So I was off one game and Rollins was off by two, hell even Nostradamus missed a couple, it happens to the best of us. PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Well, I give you points for tenacity. ;-)
I can't stop now, besides it all adds to the drama of the Philly comeback, which starts tonight with Lee! PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Only way Phillies can win this is if they Pitch Lee each of the next three games and then they'll need a lot of rain in between.
Don't see that happening, in fact, to be too suprised if the Yanks finish it tonight depite Lee pitching. He'll be very good but not as good as game one.
12.5% is better than 0% ;-)
PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
So between this snide "allegedly have" comment and the Celizic article on this site, it's nice to know NBC sports has a pro-Yankees stance. So much for impartiality, huh?
the EASY prediciton with NO RISK is that Lee dominates again tonight and sends the series to NY.
all of the MLB.COM guys have all taken the courageous step of making that predicition. of course, for them, it is preservation since if the Yanks win tonight...back to the golf course for them.
i think it ends tonight. Burnett is nasty on 3 days rest and while Lee is totally unflappable, if his command is just a little off he can be hit just like CC.
Philsin:
1) this is a blog, and blogs are about opinion. If I'm being impartial, I'm not doing my job;
2) Multiple Phillies fans have taken my predictions to task(I had the Phillies losing the NLCS and the WS) telling me that I'm wrong because the Phillies have more "heart," which they apparently take to mean that whatever "heart" is allows a team to win more baseball games than the other. Given that the Phillies are now down 3-1, I think one can only conclude that such game-winning-heart is in short supply.
one way to up the 12.5% is to hit a-rod and tex a few more times and make them so fearful of those Philly 87-91 mph fastballs that they ask to be replaced in the line-up by Hinske and Hairston.
even pedro doesn't hit people anymore...they wouldn't notice.
"I think one can only conclude that such game-winning-heart is in short supply."
See they have so much heart, they decided to allow the Yankees to win some before beating them in 7. Get it Craig? ;>)~
Does Celizic work in a cube down the hall from you? If so, please explain that plunking A-roid was nothing more than unintentional. It's not as if he was performing well before being plunked.. I swear Celizic is the dumbest sports writer to ever leave his keystrokes open for public viewing. Also tell him the Sean Connery look is played out.
I would hope someone would have noticed that 12.5% is exactly what one would expect if the teams had a 50/50 chance of winning every game in the series. That is, a team winning 3 of the first 4 doesn't seem to have any noticeable advantage over the other team at all, aside from being ahead in the series. Which makes sense given the series generally matches two of the best teams against each other.
Jimmy was asked by Leno in front on millions what he thought. What the hell else would he say. What would have Jeter said "DAH I really don't know". Gimme a break
No Craig you are totally wrong. Had the Phillies swept or won in 5, that would prove that they have a good team NOT that they have heart. They had to let it go to 7 to show us how muc heart they have.
I had no problem with what Jimmy said. That was what he should say being put on the spot like that.
But it didn't stop there. Phillies players, and even the manager, were talking trash about the atmosphere in Yankee stadium. Well, I wasn't so impressed by it over the last 2 days. I was clearly able to hear Yankees cheers at many points during the game.
This is usually a non-issue to me, I don't care whose fans are louder or more obnoxious. But if you're going to make an issue out of it, you better back it up.
Yankees are buying the WS anyway with an overblown salary scale.
The Yankees will never win another game without them having some "advantage" over the other team. It's retarded. They have the most talented team in baseball, bottom line. Every team out there has a chance to pick up any free agent. It isn't the Yankees fault other teams don't do it right. It's ok, we don't need you to give us any credit. Every time you come to our stadium, you can take a look up and see all the banners laugh at you from above. The 26 (probably 27) championships do all the talking we need. Jealously is a sin. Have an anti depressant.
I'm no Yankee fan, but I have to agree with you. The Y's have never shot off at the mouth about anyone. They are the classiest team in baseball.
If the Phils lose this series, Ryan Howard will be a major reason. It is always a problem when the player with the most strikeouts is not your starting pitcher, but your cleanup batter!!
There is about 40% chance that Yankees will win tonight. It'll be a tough going. However, any picture will fatigue after about 8th inning, and if the Yanks play the card well on pictching which I think Giraldi has, they have a shot. If the score is in favor of the Phillies by more than 4 by end of 6th inning, it's a wild card. Mr.Lee is good, but he's not the all time best. However, in the end, Yankees will prevail, and Phillies will stay home and eat their Cheese Steaks!
for the last 8 years the Yankee had the highest payroll and didnt win so dont start the "Yankees bought a World Series"
George Steinbrenner is the greatest owner in the history of sports.
Tonight its over............. #27 finally
HE COULD HAVE TAKEN THE HIGH ROAD LIKE JETER WOULD HAVE AND SAID
"JAY, WE ARE THE CHAMPS THE YANKEES ARE A GOOD TEAM, IT WILL BE A GOOD SERIES AND I WANT TO WIN , AGAIN" BUT NO JIMMY BUTTER ROLL STUCK HIS FOOT IN HIS MOUTH, JUST LIKE LAST YEAR AT THE CELEBRATION , HE HAD TO BRING UP JOHAN SANTANA, NO CLASS.JETER IS PROBABLY REMINDING BUTTER ROLL EVERYTIME HE GET'S TO SECOND, WELL THAT ONLY HAPPENED TWICE BECAUSE HE CAN'T HIT NOTHING,ZIP,NADA,ZERO.
JOE BUCK WILL MAKE THE CALL FOR THE YANKEES....
"THE YANKEES ARE CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL"..........
The Phillies and their fans are a bunch of wusses. They should be named Fillys instead. Get it through your thick heads - you're being beaten by a better team. Nothing more and nothing less.
Im a phillies fan and I have to agree with you.. Jimmy Rollins should not have done that.. Y so cocky u know?
Class is class? Mouthing off to the umpire after you're called out on strikes looking (Teixiera, Posada, Swisher, etc.) . . . or Melky Cabrera fake-throwing the ball to fans after catching a fly for the third out . . . or A-rod . . . this is class? Please. Step down off the soap box and just enjoy the win.
Hey, give the Yankees some credit. Most people thought the Phillies would make mence-meat out of them, but the Yankees have scrapped, muscled, pushed, and had great comebacks to overtake the Phillies in all these games. I actually like the Phillies a lot and thought they would take the series, but the Yankees have shown me something--I think they are just mentally tougher than the Phillies and believe in themselves even more the Phillie believes in themselves.
And all those that use the lame "the Yankees bought the series" is idiotic. Philly has high priced players also that they imported--Martinez, Lee, Lidge, etc., etc. The Red Sox are Yankees #2; and so are the Dodgers, Angels, Giants, Mets, etc. Also, the Yankees have had the highest payroll over the last decade and have won exactly zero World Series. The truth is that the Yankees have pushed all the top teams to be better and smarter with their money and rosters, which in turn has now forced the Yankees to be smarter with their money and roster. If you haven't noticed the Yankees have more home-grown talent on their roster than any other top-tier team. Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, Riviera, Hughes, Chamberlain, Coke, Robertson, Aceves, Cabrera, Gardner, etc. are all home-grown. Saying the Yankees "bought the series" is sour grapes by sore losers and makes Yankee fans laugh.
The Yankees have done more for baseball than anyone else. If the Twins or Royals or A's or Rangers, all of whom have extremely rich owners, don't want to invest money into their payrolls--well my friends, that is what is ruining baseball. All those owners could spend 150 million with ease, but they choose not to. And don't tell me that those A's teams the Yankees have been beating in the playoffs for a decade shouldn't have won some of those series--some of those A's teams were better than the Red Sox and/or Yankees, but they couldn't win, not because of payroll, but because they choked.
I think the Phillies are actually better than the Yankees right now, but it isn't money that is making the Phillies down 3 games to 1. It's simply who wants it more and who excecutes better.
And I have a feeling the Yankees just might win it all tonight simply because they want it more than the Phillies.
Yankees have no advantage? They have the biggest market and largest payroll in a non salary-capped sport.....uhhh. Yes, they get the best talent because they can buy it at absurd prices. Other teams can't pick up any player because they can't pay them like the Yankees do with their huge city population and fan base which allows them to sell out every game and charge $12 a beer. A Rod's salary this year is more than the entire Florida Marlins team. Any year the Yankees don't win is a disgrace and shows how a bunch of overpaid players can't seem to get along and play for a season. This year the stars were aligned for them. Good job having more money than everyone NY.
I will enjoy watching the Phillies fans waving their white surrender towels in the stands tonight.
"Every team out there has a chance to pick up any free agent."
Okay, technically that's true - but it's not a realistic view of the league. The Yankees obviously play in a much larger market and have much more resources than most teams. You could argue that there are some examples of losing teams with rich owners that don't make the right moves to improve their organizations. But by and large, most teams cannot spend the way the Yankees do and still run a good business.
You can call adverse reactions to the Yankees winning "jealousy," if that's what you need to do to sleep soundly. But you cannot reasonably argue that the system promotes balanced competition in the long term. Statistically speaking, the higher payrolls consistently make it to the playoffs and the lower payrolls consistently struggle to put it together. For the sake of the smaller markets, hopefully some day baseball finds a way to keep payrolls and salaries in check, more like other American sports have.
YANKS will take care of the PHILLIES tonight, very classy ball club, THE YANKEES are clearly the better team. GO YANKS, bring the world series title back to NEW YORK.
In the immortal words of the Canadian rock trio, Triumph "Never Surrender!" PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Why don't they call the Rangers' Pudge Rodriguez "P-Rod"?
I marked your words at 6---your credibility is gone
Five games, eh, Jimmy?
You better hope Cliff Lee brings his A-game tonight or you're gonna be hearing THAT one from your grandchildren, bubba.
Having said that, I have to like the Feelies' chances tonight. Unless Lee is so overstoked that he's high in the zone all night, I don't see any reason why we should expect the Borg to be able to solve him any more than they did last week. Two or three runs should be all the Feelies need, and their chances of getting those off Burnett are a damned sight better than the Borg getting that many off of a composed and focused Lee.
You can pay a player anything you want. A higher salary doesn't produce more athletic ability. The Yankees attract talent because people WANT to play for them. To say that because they have a larger payroll gives them an advantage is ludicrous. I hear a lot of envy in your message. New York is the greatest city in the world and home of the greatest baseball team in history.
"Most people thought the Phillies would make mence-meat out of them"
What planet are you on? Every baseball pundit in the country had the Yankees winning this series. They were odds-on favorites in Vegas too. Don't even try the underdog angle, that's just ridiculous.
Gotta love those classy Yankees. http://shepparded.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/slap.jpg
Seriously... the 'classy' home team (from a NY fan's POV) is just another example of self-delusion. I'm the same way about my home team... but in honest moments, I realize they've got no moral high ground either.
Classy? Please. The Yanks are the most stuck-up full-of-themselves team out there, and they pride themselves on it.
As I said above so I was off one game, sue me. PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
I completely agree with the comment about Howard. 1 hit in the last 3 losses. He doesn't necessarily have to get homeruns but he needs to hit or get on base more often to give the phils a chance.
A-Rod was striking out left and right until the homerun in Game 3 and hits in Game 4 when steroids were introduced back into his diet.
If the Yankess win maybe we can all believe in the sport again if the Phillies come back (as if their victory last year, the White Sox & 2 Red Sox World Champions weren't enough proof already) we will all certainly know that the sport is fixed.
To say that the Yankee payroll had anything whatsover to do with the outcome of the series is 100% insane.......... if that was true the Yankees during the Steinbrenner years would have won the WS every year.......Plain and simple this Yankee teamm is better than the Phillies...... more heart more grit more toughness add it all up and you get a victory and another parade in NYC
Way to go Yanks #27 and counting
Hey King it isn't that we are stuck up or full of ourselves but the difference we have tasted victory more then Boston or Philly fans. We enjoy victory but deal with defeat. This year's Yankees team is for once a very god team so if there is an air of confidence in our voice we have good reason. On the other side we have 86 years of practice knowing how to get under someones skin just ask any Red Sox fan. For the first time since 1998 I feel this team can take it all. I have said Yankees in 6 and as much as I think there is no better way to christen the new stadium then with a World Series Title it would be good to win tonight. Let's not forget the fact that the Philly fan have been just as confident with their team winnng it all, if you take a step back from a baseball perspective, as close as the two teams are the Yankees do have the edge. I am hoping for a game six I have tickets but as a friend said to me "I always believe that one needs to slay the dragon as fast as possible, so they don't have a chance to put you on fire".
MLB is fixed because the Red Sox & White Sox were allowed to win a WS Pennant? What about the Cubs? They've been the sad sack team of MLB the longest. Baseball is not fixed and the Phillies will come back to win it all. PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Yeah...the Yankees haven't won a World Series Since 2000. I'm sick of the money excuse. Talent draws talent...and frankly, how many boys have uttered the words, "when i grow up, I wan't to be a Philly". The Yankees don't whine and complain and talk trash. They dig in and focus and go for broke even in the 9th inning. We've had plenty of chances to win over the last 9 years, and Boston came back to haunt us to boot, we've had bullpen problems, and batter slumps...JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Just give them credit--this is a Worls Series, Ring Wearing Team--over and OUT.
Forget the Yankee payroll excuse, 75% of it went to retaining their own free agents, good trades and 17 players at the league min. Yes the $200 million is for the 40 man roster not the 25 man or playoff rosters. The big difference is George invested in his team instead of putting the money n his pocket and as it is said in Field Of Dreams, "If you build it whey will come" and the Yankees went from a losing team that CBS couldn't wait to unload to a team worth 100 times the selling price.
All this trash talk about "class" from a bunch of classless fans. Isn't it ironic? Let's just leave it to the teams to SHOW US who the 2009 world champs are. All this trash talk is of no consequence whatsoever. I like to see all passion from both teams fans, but this is ridiculous people. Let the chips fall as they may! GO PHILLIES!!!
RED SOX in NINE....MARK MY WORDS!!
And to think that this huge argument could've been avoided if Manual would've started Lee in Game 4, thus evening the series at 2 a piece. Too little, too late.
Fillies fans are a crude bunch. You don't hear Fillies S___k chants in NYC. City of brotherly love my a_s. Grow up and get a life.
No one ever claimed that the Yanks weren't classy. It's the braying asses that support them that one has trouble with. Can you just picture a donkey bleating "26 world championships!!!", as if trophy cases somehow factored into whether or not a team wins THIS year or as if Gherig, Mantle, Ruth, et al were still on the team.
The Yanks are alright, their fans are boors.
Who are the Fillies?
The filthys will lose dude get over it... you might well stop hangig out with lemmings too... it will lead to your demise...
Alright this is getting boring at least for me. Lets all start thinking with our heads. The Phillys are lucky to be in this series. Where would they be without the late pickup of Lee? Anyway, the Yankees are in full control and 99% sure to win in 6 if not in 5. We have seen miracles before (remember the Mets miracle year?). Of course Philly doesn't have two guys named Lee, or a Tom Seaver. The Yankees are the class of baseball, and should not blow this one. Lets get on with Football. Did you see that the Rams won one? Well they beat the Lions anyway.
Shely in Cinti.
I've waited for 59 years for this series. I've always had heart that someday the National League Phillies would prevail in competetion against teams that will always move to where the money is. But the Yankees are in New York mainly due to the city of the financial capital of ther world. Every other team has vacated the city as the money wasn't there for them to prosper. Towns that supported two major league teams are all nearly forgotten.
For years before the Connie Mack "A,s" departed Philly, the years of Phillies was more of a outcast and were the butt of all the jokes. The 1950 Team made some look a little more to the Phillies. They have came a long way since Connie Mack Stadium at 21st & leighie. They now have loyale fans and some deep pockets for supporting this team. Leanold Tosse built the Eagles and now people with heart are trying to do what the Yankee have always done. The Yankees with their 105 wins against the Junior Circuit Hasn't compared to the Senior Circuit wins of 98. With luck and smart playing and not overplaying their part we will see that 12.5% materialized into a World Series Campionship Team. At least that would be revenge for the drubbing in 1950. Up till now they have won one game and more hopefully to come.
Since the late '40s I have taken a ribbing for being a Phillies fan. Does anyone remember when years ago some fans wanted a change in uniforms and lego of the Phillies, wasn't it being sold as the Philly "Blue Jays" That was beaten down, that went to Toronto and what did Carter do to wild man "Mitch" Win lose or draw I've wittnessed the two teams playing each other 59 years later. "GO PHILLIES" but may the best team win. I have lived in New England since '68 and have never rooted for the Red Socks or Yankees. Philly will always be my "HOME TOWN" Signed the "Mule Team" as in twenty mule team.
The filthys will lose dude get over it... you might well stop hangig out with lemmings too... it will lead to your demise...
Wishful thinking at best... However, your loyalty to the 2008 champs is a plus for Philly fan base...After all, the Phills won all the marbles last year.
By the way, Have you wondered how the Phillies got their name? Was it because it is tied to Philadelphia? Or; was it because the designation "Fillies" meaning several young female horses was under consideration and was passed over. If anyone has an answer I welcome your feed back.
How was the name Phillies arrived at? Was not the original name the PHILS?
Comments by others such as games are fixed etc...If I was a Psychiatrist I would stick my arm in the air like an Umpure and shout "IRRATIONAL BEHAVIOR". Right now I'm just waiting for tonight's game to sbegin. If the Phils win...So be it! THat means I get to watch game 6 and then maybe game 7/ After that, I'm watching the Lakers!
Ciao
Philsin7, you're calling NBC partial to the Yankees. Hilarious! What channel have you been watching? FOX Sports impartial? Joe Buck, impartial? Tim McCarver, impartial? All the derisive and negative things about ARod being in a slump when all his at-bats were strikeouts. Haven't heard a word criticizing Howard for striking out. Howard's not the Savior he was in the NLDS and the NLCS, is he? Looks to me like the NLCS series MVP needs something. Of course, he was "vindicated" by scoring last night when he didn't even touch home plate. The Phillies can do no wrong but the Yankees are pure evil, yeah right! YANKEES IN FIVE! MARK MY WORDS!
If the Phillies had gotten P-Rod instead of letting him go back to the Rangers they would already be champs.
I understand that blogs are opinions, but at the very least, they should be well-informed opinions.
If someone were to do some actual analysis on the Phillies chances (which is flawed within itself... I mean its baseball - anything can and will happen) then we should be looking at how many teams have won 3 consecutive games in a World Series.
Of the 101 seven game World Series' played since 1903, 62 teams have won 3 games in a row.
The last 6 Series played involved a team that won at least 3 games in a row... the last being the 2008 Phillies.
So, the Phillies actually have a 61.4% chance of winning the next 3 games.
John - you should shut your rat-trap and stop making these silly predictions. The Yanks are the superior team - period
I should revise my statement... the last team to win 3 in a row was the 2009 Yankees.
No you got it all wrong John... It's the Yanks in 6 games...
according to their wiki
"After being founded in 1883 as the "Quakers", the team changed its name to the "Philadelphias", after the convention of the times. This was soon shortened to "Phillies"."Quakers" continued to be used interchangeably with "Phillies" from 1884 until 1890, when the team officially became known as the "Phillies".
Phillies in 9
I am sorry that so many Yankees fans are blind to their own trash talking ways...
Jimmy Rollins may have made a prediction, when asked, but he certainly did not initiate the question on Leno. And so what that he made the prediction? The media and the Yankees fans have totally blown it out of proportion.
How about the NY papers putting Shane Victorino on their cover in a cheerleader outfit- and calling the team and their fans names BEFORE the series started?
How about the NY papers trashing the city of Philadelphia BEFORE the series even started?
How about the NY papers trashing the Phanatic (what did he ever do to anyone? Give me a break, what class that takes to make fun of a mascot!)
Let me tell you, I was AT game three at the Bank, and there were many classless Yankee fans yelling all sorts of wonderful things too- so don't think it is only Phillies fans that can lack decorum during a contest like this series. In fact, I got to see several fights instigated by the classy Yankee fans in my section-- resulting in a bottle being thrown by the Yankee fan while his young children watched--and the end result of explusion from the game.
So, if fan class is somehow a prerequisitte for winning this series--the series is definately still up for grabs.
I know, as a Phillies fan, I do get tired of hearing:
How great the Yankees are, and that they are entitled to win
How lucky the Phillies are to be in the series
How Yankees are all things good, and everyone else should just bow down in front of them
How low class every and any thing Philadelphia is compared to the sainted NY Yankees and their fans.
________
How about we just play ball?
i say the yankees should be pitching gaudin tonight. if lee pitches his usual gem then there's a good chance we lose, meanwhile you're wasting burnett. if lee stumbles, i dont know that gaudin cant pitch well enough to keep us in.
#2 if gaudin pitches tonight and yanks do lose you have a fully rested burnett at home against pedro. i'll take that matchup again.
#3 if it did go to a game 7, you have a fully rested pettitte and a 3 day rested sabathia against coles.
cleveland had a $30 million dollar operating profit this year. yankees had a $50 million dollar operating loss. tampa had an operating profit this year as well. if cleveland fans want to complain they should be complaining about their ownership that wants to make sure they have a profit rather than winning on the field. with that $30 mil profit they could have signed at least 2 quality guys....probably even sabathia or lee.
stop crying about what the yankees do with their money.
SO THE YANKEES HAVE A 87.50% chance of taking this thing ??
I'm no "Jonny come lately". I will stand by my team till the end. Until the fat lady sings.
And heck no I've never wondered where the name came from. But now you've sparked my interest. A: After being founded in 1883 as the "Quakers", the team changed its name to the "Philadelphias", after the convention of the times. This was soon shortened to "Phillies".[3] "Quakers" continued to be used interchangeably with "Phillies" from 1884 until 1890, when the team officially became known as the "Phillies".
Also i just learned, thanks to you.....
The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional American sports, dating to 1883.
I love the Phils but heart and $2.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Denny's. The Yanks are unbeatable this year, IMHO. After that bonehead defensive gaff the Phils made last night, I realized that not only do the Yankees have a fundamentally stronger team (find me a weak hitter in their offensive lineup) but they consistently make fewer mistakes than their opponents (and cash in on every one made against them, again, witness last night).
Much as it pains me to say it, I have to go with the Yanks winning it all this year.
Payroll, payroll, blah, blah. Nothing personal to those fine Phillies fans...but the Phillies suck and so do their fans. Thank you and have a nice day.
The difference in the salaries for the Phillies and the Yankees? Teixeira, Jeeter AJ and Arod....4 players = ~90M a year....so do those four players going anywhere else create World Series Champs?
In the 1979 World Series, the Pirates were down 3 games to 1
to Baltimore, and won the last three games!! So, it can happen!
Good Afternoon,
None of the Yankee haters know what they are talking about. The Yankees have money because they win, they've always won. When you win, you get high attendance . . which is money. You also sell a lot of advertising. . .which is money. You also get a lot of media and TV coverage. . which is money. Money is invested in farming and attracting new talent, which eventually pays dividends in the form of wins and championships, which the Yankees are the best at.
Facts for those of you who understand that statistics and hard numbers do the talking, not obnoxious 1 time flash in the pan winners whose players mouth off on the Jay Leno show about how they'll let the Yankees win one:
1. The New York Yankees have been in 40 World Series (including 2009), and have won 26 of them.
2. The New York Yankees have more World Championships than any other team in the history of baseball, and are the "Winningest" team in the history of professional sports in terms of World Series Championships, Number of Pennants, Wins, and just about every offensive and defensive category in existence.
3. The New York Yankees won in 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000.
4. The New York Yankees won the World Series 4 straight years from 1936-1939, then 5 straight years from 1949-1953, then 2 straight years from 1961-1962, then 2 straight years from 1977-1978, followed by 4 out of 5 in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000.
4. A majority of the best players in baseball, as well as the records that accompany them are all New York Yankees: Hall of Famers include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengal, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Thurmon Munson, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry, Dave Winfield, and hopefully soon to be Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera, and A-Rod.
This is the long way around of saying the Yankees are the best, have the most class, and are the most storied franchise in history.
Maybe the Phillies and their fans should recognize that they've won only 2 World Championships, and are the "Losing-est" team in Major League history. Let's not forget on July 16th, 2007, they suffered their 10,000th loss, the most of any team in United States Sports history. Let's have some respect for the real team, New York.
Sincerely,
Tommy "Sick of the Bull-Sh@t" the Yankee fan
Manuel never should have played that loser Lidge and should have ONLY played Lee past night. The stats would now be 2-2. See you in Clearwater, this season is over.
he moron.. those argued calls were legit.. i mean even as the yankees hater you are you have to realize that the HP ump was, if not outright cheating, giving calls to Blanton that CC wasnt getting over and over.. "Or A-rod" yea hat about A-rod?
Hey Phillies Fan,
The Yankees have the right to brag, although they don't. Their numbers speak for them. Most "Filly" fans are just jealous. The Yankees are the best, as you're learning.
Bye the way, let's leave the comparisons of city versus city out of it. New York City is the capital of the world, and Philadelphia can't hold a candle to it. You have cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and a baseball team that doesn't know how to keep their mouths shut . . . . . New York has 8 million people, The Empire State building, Chrysler Building, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Madison Square Garden, 5th Avenue, and the BEST TEAM THAT HAS EVER BEEN CREATED IN HISTORY.
P.S. New York will shut their mouths for them.
Tommy "Sick of the Bull-Sh@t" the Yankee fan
Just tell us....in seven after you are down 3-1..What are you drinking...buddy. You have you World Series Championship....time to be de-throne
The only way for those Phils win today is if they throw a couple more beanballs at A-Rod.
Well, duh. They have to win 3 games. The bare, coin-flip odds of winning one game are 50%, the odds of winning two games in a row are thus 25%, the odds of three in a row are...12.5%. WTF is your point?
hey all u yankee bashers were are u now i wonder if your chests are pumped up or deflated between you and a lot of sportscasters who thought the yanks were to old to slow spoiled getting all the calls just look at some of the calls going against them granted they got maybe 1 or 2 their way and a rod getting plunked 3 times and not 1 yankee hurler getting any revenge i would love to see a philly gey plunked and see what happens after that
Please remember that Philadelphia is the birthplace of this nation, not NY. Talk what trash you must, but please NY fans don't tell us we are the only one's talking trash bc you are doing your fair share also. I am a Phillies fan, do I hope they win the WS this year yes, do I know it will be hard bc we are down 3-1 yes, but I am not giving up on them, just like any other fan wouldn't give up on their team either. BTW we are a real team just like all of the other teams in MLB, are you suggesting that NY is the ONLY real team in baseball, bc if that is what you are infact saying then why don't you win the WS every year is you are the only "real" team? enough of the nonsense see you guys at game 5 tonight.
I get the biggest kick out of all the bantering between the Yankee fans and the Phillies fans, all the hub bub, stats, this player that player etc. The bottom line to me is so simple people can't see the forest because the trees are in the way, it's not the talent that's winning, it's the money, all the Yankee's have to do is buy who ever they want and the rest is history. Probably to simple for some people to understand.
Rick
"Hall of Famers include...." - You might want to check your list of Hall of Famers there, Tommy....
Phillies will win tonight with Cliff Lee, but it's all set to go back to New York so the damn Yankees can win the whole thing there. Gotta make that money...
"it's not the talent that's winning, it's the money, all the Yankee's have to do is buy who ever they want and the rest is history"
wow... simply wow.. all im going to say there.
One thing that disturbs me the most...You see in game one how Yankee stadium cleared out after the 6 inning? Did that even come close to happening in Philly? NO. I spoke with some Yankee fans and they said, "Why would we watch them lose?"
Zero respect for those Yankees fans.
Dude, the town of filthydelphia is know as a classless city full of blowhard a-hole fans. Get over it. When their team is winning they are the loudest jerks on the planet, and when they're losing they don't pay any attention to the team. With the exception of the eagles, when they're losing they just boo their own team. Nice....
Very Disturbing to Read all the nasty comments about both teams. When did America's National Pasttime get to be so acromious. I've Been a Loyal Phillie Fan for 19 years and not about to stop now, but you've got to admit the Yanks Really are giving us quite a run for the money. As the Song Says "Say alittle Prayer For You". There still the 08 World Champions but they could stand to dump Hamels and maybe Big Mouth Rollins too.
Get over it, Philly fans. Your team never had a chance. Yes, your team is the defending champion but you didn't play a real team last year. Played the Rays for crying out loud.
Not too hard to figure, without reference to old stats. The chances of winning any 3 in a row are exactly 12.5%, assuming even odds on each game.
*** Well, duh. They have to win 3 games. The bare, coin-flip odds of winning one game are 50%, the odds of winning two games in a row are thus 25%, the odds of three in a row are...12.5%. WTF is your point? ***
I guess one interesting point would be that there is no statistical evidence for a lot of the sports-psychology BS that floats around. If there were anything to the idea that teams got on "hot streaks" or losing teams got discouraged or any of that, you'd expect to see results much worse than a coin toss. Apparently not. Hot and cold streaks have been debunked any number of times with much larger samples of course, but this is one more example.
It also raises the issue of whether a 7-game series really tells anything about who is the better team. If you can't tell anything about the last three games from the results of the first four, then are seven really any better?
these philly fans are not only unrealistic but they are the bottom feeders of sport fans...nobody from any sport enjoys going to philly...dirty city, disgusting fans with absolutely no class...shooting of your mouth as a player (rollins) shows the arrogance of a bunch of losers...no you won't win back to back and yes, the rest of the country, even those that love to hate the yankees, will be happy to see the philly fans in there place, which is the sewer...yeah philly you all have lots of class...too bad it's all LOW...
Yankees and Phillies are NORTHEASTERN teams, who get recognition because of Media Bias in New York.
The Nation'e population grows/moves south and west, but these baseball teams and media don't have a clue about that.
Nobody's mooving to Pennsylvnaia or New York anyway--they are passe/trashy places to live.
I dont care if either team wins/loses--
Personally I'm a Texan--"Dont mess with Texas!"
[No Texan nor Southerner wants to be a Philly or Yankee anyway--it would be an insult to our heritage!]
Tommy the Yankee Fan said everything that needs to be said!!!
The Yankees are playing for their 27th, say it again, 27th World Championship...Philly has how many?? Just crying about how much money the Yankees spend isn't the point...If players didn't want to play in New York, they wouldn't be there, no matter how much money they are offered.
Where's all the money Steinbrenner has paid out all these years to the other teams? Have your owners put that money back into their teams? The Marlins showed that you can buy a championship if you spend enough, ONE...that's what Luria bought...don't blame the Yankees for doing what every other sports fan wish their owner would do. The Yankees have had more than their share of busts too...look at Ed Whitson and Carl Pavano to name a few...but overall, they get what they pay for!
The Yankees may win it tonight, maybe not...But overall, I can hear the fat lady starting to sing...or maybe it's Dandy Don Meridith, tuning up "Turn Out The Lights, The Party's Over"...
Bottom feeders... filthydelphia...unrealistic...disgusting fans...blowhard a-hole fans...wusses-- these are just some of the comments made here about the Phillies, their fans and the city.
Maybe we need to a definition of class for the slower students in this discussion?
Oh, and a US History lesson would not hurt for some either.
It always helps your argument when you stick to the facts and do not resort to name calling.
Think your team is better? Fine, but to go after non-baseball play issues makes your point of view weak.
You said....
"...Class is class? Mouthing off to the umpire after you're called out on strikes looking (Teixiera, Posada, Swisher, etc.) . . . or Melky Cabrera fake-throwing the ball to fans after catching a fly for the third out . . . or A-rod . . . this is class? Please. Step down off the soap box and just enjoy the win...."
I say...
#1 That umpires strike zone was ALL OVER THE PLACE, as the FOX K-Zone clearly showed... Plenty of Phillies were jawing at him too..
#2 Melky was fake throwing the ball to the fans, because those fans had been winging coins at him and Swisher all night. You wanna talk about classless, talk about those Phillies fans... Who the hell throws coins at outfielders trying to play???? They should have been ejected and arrested.
#3 The soap box you speak of actually belongs to Rollins for bragging and making cocky statements he couldn't back up... we're just borrowing it to talk about a REAL team, with REAL class.
Go Yankees!!!
Okay Phillies Fan...Let's stick to the facts!!!
Franchise Started: Yankees - 1901 Phillies - 1883
Team Wins: Yankees - 9,575 Phillies - 9,038
Team Loses: Yankees - 7,294 Phillies - 10,167
Winning Pct: Yankees - .568 Phillies - .471
Games over .500: Yankees - 2,281 Phillies - Nope (-1129)
Pennants: Yankees - 40 Phillies - 7
World Series Wins: Yankees - 26 Phillies - 2
Hall of Famers: Yankees - 43 Phillies - 32
Comparing the two franchises...Not even close...those are the facts!
The Phillies are a great team, defending World Champions...got to give them their due...But...this year the 400 pound gorilla is back in the room...and it's the New York Yankees!!! Go anywhere in the world and people know what the NY on the cap stands for...
akbar, you should change your user name as it is sillier than my predictions. PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Wondering what ANY of this has to do with THIS season?
Die hard Yankees fan here... while nothing is impossible.. i think one of the worst things that would come out of a Phillies upset would be you getting your own TV Show called "Mark My words" where you get to make rediculous predictions. LETS GO YANKEES 2009 AND BEYOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John the 'Mark My Words' guy, you are my new hero.
Mark it in your toilet and flush it.
I really hate to jump into the fray here, but it seems that no one is going to call you out for a really dumb comment. If the Rays weren't a "real" team last year, where in Hades does that leave the Yankees? I mean, I hate to shatter your silly illusions and all, but the Rays finished two slots above the Yankees in the AL East standings in 2008. Those "real" Yankees watched all of the 2008 playoffs from the comfort of their living rooms. Just sayin'...
Hey Einsteins from Philly...Lee may win tonight, and I did say may, but can he pitch two more games? So far that has had the only dominant outing by a Phillie's pitcher, Yankees have now had two: AJ and Andy P...can your Philly math calculate those odds? Let's see 3 games left, 1 dominating pitcher = Yankees in 6, maybe 5....
well said
that story is old
Oh c'mon. Lighten up. Half the fun in sports is trash talk!I love Jimmy Ro, that guy is great. It's not a matter of class, it's just a different way to play the game. I mean, if you want to argue class, let's have a discussion about A-Rod. Exactly! Not worth the discussion. Play ball and talk trash! It's all good.
And sit Lidge. You can't play Lidge. Lidge can't pitch. In case you missed it, let Grandma pitch before you give Lidge the ball. I don't want to sugarcoat it here, but Lidge shouldn't pitch. Can't pitch. I'm not even sure I'd let him suit up in case they completely ran out of pitchers and had to pick somebody. Any questions?
Didn't Pettite give up 5 runs? Hell, as long as Lidge doesn't have to pitch, I think Philly still has a chance.
If you gotta go to Lidge this year, might as well kiss that tropy goodbye now. Sorry Brad, you were immortal last year. This year, someone put krypton in your jock. All bad.
I'd be all over John the Phillies in Six guy getting his own show! How's this for an unrealistic prediction: Yankees cut payroll, win World Series!
Not to nitpick or anything Thankgdformyyankeehand, or whatever your name is, but I believe the correct spelling is "ridiculous" not "rediculous." One down two to go! PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Hmmmmm... math was never my strong subject but I'll give it a shot. AJ pitched one good game and one bad game so far in the WS which means his percentage of good games he's pitched is 50%. Now given that Pettite is only going on three days rest as well, along with the fact he's old, he'll pitch as bad or worse than AJ did tonight. In the end it'll be the PHILLIES IN SEVEN!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!
Phillies in 11! David my words!
It's 2009! All of these old stats are meaningless you dope!!! "Fans" such as yourself are exactly why the Yankees are despised by 90% of the country!!!! If MLB ever imposes a salary cap, the Yankees will never see another championship. If you want respect Tommy, shut that weenie-holster of yours that keeps yapping!!!
The Phillies should have traded for Pudge Rodriguez. Then it would have been P-Rod vs. A-Rod.
Such a usefule blog…wow !!!!
Glad I stumbled across your site! Interesting discussion but don't you think slightly narrow minded? Maybe it just seems that way to me. Let me read the post again.
