Asterisked players are injured. Arredondo and DiFelice are expected to miss the entire 2010 season following arm surgeries. Miller might be in the same boat. Reyes will miss the first half as he continues his recovery from Tommy John, and Wang's rehab is expected to continue through the end of April at least.

Whoever said Theo Epstein was a genius? He blew it on A-Rod and Teixeira and he's about to blow it on Jay.Not only do the Yankees have a larger payroll; they also have a smarter GM.
I don't know if Cashman is smarter than Epstein since Cashman was provided with several blank checks last year. Is Epstein under financial constraints? I know in Atlanta, Wrenn can't surpass $100 million, which prevents him from getting a clutch hitting big stick. We just have to be content with contending until the final eight weeks when the Braves can't make the final push to get into the playoffs.

How did Epstein blow it on A-Rod? MLB wouldn't allow A-Rod to re-negotiate his contract, that's what blew that deal up. Epstein had the trade all set and ready to go.
The Teixeira thing was a case where Tex wanted to be a Yankee. That's why he's a Yankee.
Re-signing Jason Bay won't make or break the Red Sox. Bay wants more money and more dollars than he's worth. He's a $15 million/year player, at most. Outside of Fenway his shady defense is going to be on full display. He's got huge power, but that's about it.
Cashman is a smart dude, but he also has a constant blank check at his disposal. As much money as the Sox spend, they don't have the same level of financial freedom.
The Sox had the ability to cut A-Rod the same type of the contract the Yankees did. They chose not to and lost the gamble. The same with Tex. They dinked around, and Tex wasn't going to mess around when he had a firm offer on the table. In both cases, the Sox outsmarted themselves.
