Even though everyone except Boras knows and can admit that his representation of Damon this off season has been shite, he is now blaming Johnny's situation on owners who are not willing to do what is necessary to win. This guy is deluded!
If Johnny has 4 or 5 offers they can't be so far apart that he is having trouble deciding between offers, take the best one (if there is a best) and sign it and get ready for spring training. Scott here is what should happen: you should refund all monies that you have charged Damon over the past year for your services. Admit in a public forum that you screwed Johnny over (because you were too busy bl**ing Matt Holliday) and that you made a mistake not taking the Yankees 2 year/14 million dollar deal, and lastly let Damon or someone of his choosing punch you in the face. The last part should be televised on ESPN!

Ummm, Johnny, teams are signing guys like Jacque Jones now. Most of the guys that are being signed to minor league deals can at least make the outfield throw to the cut-off man.

I think he'll do well for someone once he gets under $5M, and he's a pretty easy player to like.

Having said that, it's typical Johnny. Find (another) place that you really like, get a reasonable offer, and turn it down in an effort to squeeze more money. Just like Nomar. You can take more money, remain a local legend, have a shot at winning WSC's, or become a low-paid journeyman with no shot at the WS.

I'm no martyr, and would like the most I can reasonably get, but 'reasonable' is the key. It's okay to get paid really well, in a really nice place, without necessarily getting every last dollar possible.

Teams have worked out a new strategy for working with Boras. For anyone less than a "best in class" free agent, it seems to work quite well. The Yankees made a "Take it or leave it" offer, and they meant it. The Red Sox did the same thing with Boras/Damon in 2005. Negotiating with Boras means dealing with a bunch of phantom offers, while he "runs out the clock" as alternative choices diminish. So the wise move is to make one offer and move on. In this case, the Yankees didn't need to negotiate with anyone, and notice how they didn't. Notice how time works against Boras instead of for him.

Although Damon may be past his prime, so is Boras. On a good day, Johnny can still hit the long ball, and Boras can land a deal for guys like Texiera. But there aren't as many good days as before.

He had a great offer from the yankees. He can't throw and he plays outfield, but can hit rather well. 7 million a year was a great offer. Johnny and Boras screwed up. Big time. They know and so does everyone else. He was misled I think. Misled to think the Yankees would pay him more than a weak armed, well hitting outfielder is worth. Reality is now setting in. He'll take a 2 year offer for less than 7 million a year now. Much less. IN YOUR FACE GREED!!!

This whole sitauation has been embarrasing for Damon and Boras. I think there are a couple of moments where this thing took nasty turns:

Nasty Turn #1, 'Don't make an offer if it is not for at least $13M and three years' - An agent can't demand an offer. They can decline one, but they can't tell a team what to do. Offensive and arrogant.

Nasty Turn #2, In a span of 48 hours the Yankees lost an opportunity to sign Matsui and Cameron, waiting for Damon and Boras. I believe the Yankess wanted Cameron in center (a right handed bat) Granderson in left (left handed) and Damon or Matsui at DH. And we would have avoided the signing of 15 additional outfielders. I believe they felt Boras was delaying them until their options dried up, not a bad strategy if they wait. But never in the best interest of a team when Boaras is involved.

Nasty Turn #3 - Boras said the Yankees did not make Damon an offer. OK, how well did it go over to say Cashman lied. Even Damon won't back up his agent on that lie. And that is when things really got hard.

Nasty Turn #4 (yet to come) - Damon signs for less than $6M with no chance of reaching the WS.

This has been a classic winter in how to kill a potential Hall of Fame career. Damon needss the Yankees for any chance at the hall and he is peeing it away based on pride and a bad agent. Take $2M and have a chance at the hall. You will get more at bats (the Yankess score alot, there more at bats), the best line up protection in baseball (Texiera/A-Rod) and a great on base batter to keep pitchers honest (Jeter). STOP BEING STUPID.

Boras can sell to owners who overpay but has proven to be a terrible negotiator. Cas closed.

It could also just be a matter of GMs getting a little smarter. For Holliday, StL probably knew that he would A) sign with the NYY and StL had no chance, or B) NYY weren't signing him, and in that case, they had the best offer on the table and refused to bid against themselves. They got Holliday for about the same p.a. as the Mets paid Bay.

And like one of the other posters said, teams can't afford to leave their offers on the table while their options dry up. The RS offered Bay $15M. When he declined, they called up Lackey. Once Damon declined, they went with the superior alternative in Granderson. The waiting game can be played both ways.
