Former Mets GM and ESPN talking head Steve Phillips was on the Today show this morning, opening his heart about his treatment for sex addiction. No word on if he was angry about being totally overshadowed by Tiger Woods in that department, but there was a lot of remorse and apologies to his family and things of that nature.Which is good, because for as much as I've ripped Phillips in the past, I feel bad for the guy. Not for what he did to himself -- he dug his own grave with the job and the publicity and all of that -- but for the fact that there's a really good chance he's going to lose his family over this and that even if he doesn't, their relationship will forever be altered. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and just because his wounds are self-inflicted doesn't mean they aren't wounds.
On a lighter note, the article says that Phillips' program was an AA-style 12-stepper. Anyone who knows about those knows that a key part is making amends. And the amends don't just have to be things the recovering party did while specifically subject to the addiction in question. Which means that, sooner or later Mets fans, expect Phillips to call you up and apologize to you for the Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar, Pedro Astacio, Mike Bordick, Bobby Bonilla, Rickey Henderson, Kenny Rogers, and Jeromy Burnitz deals.
If he'd done a better job as GM, we wouldn't be stuck with Omar now.
Personally, I like this idea that there's such a thing as "sex addiction." That's right up there with razor-blade sharpening pyramids. And speaking of sharpening razor blades, aside from wondering how the hell his gonadatrophic excesses distinguish Steve Phillips from the rest of this civilization, why didn't he just have his goddamned balls cut off if he was so totally out of control? Hardly a week goes by when I don't pass the wall of tabloid imbecility at the checkout counter at Publix where there's a headline that some idiot tried to do the number on himself?

And really, consider the concentric imbecilities of working for an industry that has been glorifying sexuality and selling the idea that you ain't shit if you don't draw chicks like flies - and then getting shitcanned for getting laid.
What's he apologizing for??? The MEDIA and fans should apologize to him imo. We're sorry to be so intrusive into your PERSONAL LIFE as to have cost you your job Mr. Phillips.

I've never understood his popularity with the media. He ruined the Mets. He picked the Seattle Mariners to finish first 2 years ago so he knows nothing about BB. Everything he says is wrong and now he's shown to not be a good husband and father. Why do these "celebrities" who get caught cheating suddenly become "sex addicts" as if it's an addiction instead of a moral weakness. Is it so that we forgive them? He cheated and got caught. Simple as that. His 15 min of fame should be over.
